Inveraray Castle

When in Scotland you are absolutely spoiled for choice when it comes to Castles. When making a short list I think its a lot easier to pick castles that are near others sites and place that you intend to visit. There is such thing as seeing to many castles (I feel this applies to churches as well especially in Europe). I was fortunate that while staying on an Estate in Argyll on the west coast of Scotland Inveraray Castle was one of the suggested day trips and where I was dropping my friend off to catch a bus back to Edinburgh.

I have to say though Inveraray Castle really doesn’t disappoint in any way. This Castle is breathtaking and almost Disney perfect. The fact that a student ticket is only 9 pound (1 pound discount if you buy your ticket online) and the castle is a lovely stroll from the town of Inveraray it ticks all the boxes for a perfect day out.

Inveraray Castle is still home to the current Duke of Argyll and is the seat of Clan Campbell. The Castle has been used in films and tv and you may recognize the State dining room in particular as Inveraray castle was the castle visited in Downton Abby when the family went to visit relatives in Scotland.

The castle is kept in such good condition and there is a large number of rooms which visitors are allowed to explore. The Armoury hall is pretty impressive and makes a very large statement when you enter.

The gardens surrounding the castle are really something special and make sure you give yourself enough time to explore them properly. I don’t know how we were so fortunate that the weather on the day we visited was truly spectacular with the sun out and no rain in site it did make for a pretty spectacular day.

I really have to say that there is so much to see and do on the west coast of Scotland and if your going to make it all the was to Scotland I think its more then worthwhile to find a way to make it to the west coast. Inveraray Castle should definitely make the list of things to do while there and even without a car is a spot that’s easier to get to then you may think.
